Teacher Resources for the Virtual Classroom
Storm King Art Center is pleased to offer two virtual teaching resources for exploring ideas and artworks.
These teacher guides provide prompts, resources, and information to be used in conjunction with digital slideshows. By focusing on a theme within Storm King’s collection, we hope to engage your students in conversation, close looking, and activities that can support your visual art, language arts, science, and social studies curricula. School Group Visits
We welcome school groups of all ages to the Art Center. Reservations are required for groups of 12 or more and for any group arriving by full-sized bus (or any vehicle that will not fit in a standard parking spot). All group visit requests must be submitted at least three weeks in advance. Learn more about visiting with a school group here.
We are pleased to offer schools that receive Title I funding free admission. Public school groups visiting from Orange, Putman, Dutchess, Ulster, and Sullivan counties receive free admission.
Teacher Programs
Storm King hosted a portion the summer session of the Hudson Valley Writing Project’s 2022-23 Invitational Institute, Leadership in the Teaching of Writing. Comprised of three graduate courses, this acclaimed program supports educators in developing expertise in writing instruction and literacy development as well as facilitation skills to work as leaders in the Writing Project and their school communities. At Storm King, modern and contemporary art inherently intersects with multiple disciplines and perspectives. The engineering, fabrication, material science, and earth-moving required by the collection and its built environment offer a wealth of lessons in experimentation, planning, collaboration, and problem-solving. The art of close observation in the field, linking the work of scientists and artists, has become a central tenet running through all education initiatives. Place-based writing and poetry have also found a natural home at Storm King. At the core of these multidisciplinary connections remains a commitment to creating access for students and teachers to the outdoor sculpture and landscape of the Art Center.
