Geology of Storm King

Hike with geologist Kim Fendrich to explore the deep connections between art and geology at Storm King. The tour will visit several key sculptures and landscapes at Storm King that were developed with geologic materials both from the local area and around the world. Learn about how the geologic forces of earth shaped Storm King’s place in the Hudson Valley, and how artists have come to collaborate with the story of these natural elements.

- Please note this tour will be approximately three hours long, traveling on foot over varied terrain. Dress warmly and bring hiking boots or sneakers, water, and snacks.
Kim Fendrich has a passion for connecting people with the land and its complex geologic history with the goal of inspiring environmental stewardship. Over the last 10 years, her classroom space has evolved from the collegiate setting at the University of Arizona to the American Museum of Natural History, and finally to the great outdoors. Kim is the Educator and Program Coordinator at Rockefeller State Park Preserve with a M.S. in geosciences from the University of Arizona.
ACCESSIBILITY
Terrain and Getting Around
The tour will take place across varied terrain including hills, wooded areas, paved paths, gravel paths, and mown lawn. Expect to cover 1.5 to 2 miles on the tour.
Accessible Cart Service
An accessible golf cart may be requested to assist with moving between sculptures during the hike. Service is available on a first come, first served basis. Please make a request in advance by emailing info@stormkingartcenter.org. The cart can accommodate up to five visitors sitting in seats; or one wheelchair-using visitor with up to three additional passengers in seats. The weight capacity for the ramp is 650lbs.
Restrooms
Accessible portable restroom stalls are located near the entrance.
ASL interpretation for guided tours is available upon request two weeks in advance. Every effort will be made to honor requests made with less notice.
