H. Peter Stern Concert: Arun Ramamurthy Trio (ART)
In partnership with World Music Insititute, Storm King presents an autumn afternoon of Indian classical music. Concert included with admission.
Arun Ramamurthy Trio (ART) brings a fresh approach to age-old South Indian classical repertoire. The trio’s collaborative sound is driven by the propulsive rhythm section of drummer Sameer Gupta and bassist Perry Wortman. The Carnatic canon is remixed in this seamless integration of styles as the group expands on the traditional compositions in explosive, improvisational flights of fancy. Arun’s original work pays homage to Carnatic rhythmic structures and rich tonalities while expanding the music with a modern jazz backbeat.
By staying true to raga, the modes which form the melodic foundation for Indian classical composition, but finding the full sonic identity of a skilled ensemble, Ramamurthy’s trio discovers new common ground and moments of organic conversation between two traditions, both based on a balance of rigor and freedom. ART’s improvisational and fluid base takes new shape as an ensemble speaking varying dialects.
Selected by NPR’s New Sounds as a Top New Release and listed as a Best Release of 2014 by All About Jazz’s Dan McCleneghan, ART’s debut album ‘Jazz Carnatica’ has received critical acclaim. Featured performance venues include Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Jazz Gallery, Ragas Live Festival at Pioneer Works (Brooklyn), David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Cornelia Street Cafe, Museum of Moving Images and more. ART is a core ensemble of Brooklyn Raga Massive, a musicians’ collective of Indian Classical and raga-inspired musicians dedicated to bridging musical cultures.
