SUMMARY:Message from the Mud: A Conversation with Anicka Yi & Rana Dasgupta
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n3:30PM: Artist Conversation\nJoin artist Anicka Yi and au
thor Rana Dasgupta for a conversation anchored by Message from the Mud\, Y
i’s first large-scale outdoor installation. In their respective work\, b
oth Yi and Dasgupta consider life and interdependence in the context of hu
man and non-human systems across vast timescales\, offering new ways to un
derstand the past\, metabolize our present\, and open pathways to imagine
 new futures.\n\nSpeaker Bios\n\nAnicka Yi (b.1971 in Seoul\, South Korea)
is a Korean-American conceptual artist known for her focus on olfaction an
d her use of unorthodox\, living\, and perishable materials. Informed by s
cientific research\, biology\, and perfumers\, Yi has produced a unique bo
dy of work over the past decade at the intersection of politics and macrob
iotics. Her practice questions the increasingly hazy taxonomic distinction
s between what is human\, animal\, plant\, and machine\, and is the result
of an alchemical process of experimentation that explores often incompati
ble materials. She collaborates with researchers to create media that are
often inherently political and delves into the cultural conditioning of se
nse and perception in a way she describes as “biopolitics of the senses.
"\n\nHer diverse installations\, which draw on scientific concepts and tec
hniques to activate vivid fictional scenarios\, ask incisive questions abo
ut human psychology and the workings of society. Yi's work has been the su
bject of numerous solo exhibitions at institutions around the world\, incl
 uding the Leeum Museum of Art\, Seoul\; Pirelli Hangar Bicocca\, Milan\; T
 ate Modern\, London\; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, New York\; and th
 e List Visual Arts Center\, MIT\, Cambridge\, Massachusetts\; among many o
thers.\n\nRana Dasgupta is the author of “Solo” and “Capital: A Port
rait of Delhi in the Twenty-First Century.”  His latest book\, “After
Nations: The Making &amp\; Unmaking of a World Order” offers a global h
istory of the nation-state\, and a diagnosis of the large-scale transition
engulfing the world today.  He is the recipient of the Commonwealth Writ
ers’ Prize\, the Windham-Campbell Prize and the The Ryszard Kapuścińsk
i Award.  He lives in France. \n\n\n4:30PM: Before Skeletons\, Before Te
eth\nFollowing the talk\, guests are invited to explore the work and enjoy
Before Skeletons\, Before Teeth\, a prehistoric culinary experience by An
icka Yi with Care of Chan.Using the lens of “prehistoric biofiction\,”
Yi has imagined a prehistoric culinary experience to accompany her exhibi
tion  at Storm King. Grounded in science\, “prehistoric biofiction” t
akes an imaginative approach to what life on earth might have looked like
and could become\, if different evolutionary histories had taken course. I
n keeping with Yi’s artistic practice\, Before Skeletons\, Before Teeth
offers visitors an embodied experience of her installation at Storm King n
ot only visually\, but also though smell\, touch\, and taste.\nCulinary Ar
