Allyson Vieira invites visitors to see Storm King Art Center in new ways with her limited edition map: A Tour of the Monuments of Storm King Art Center. This project, inspired by Robert Smithson’s A Tour of the Monuments of Passaic, New Jersey, highlights previously unmapped infrastructure and support objects that silently co-exist with Storm King’s monumentally-scaled sculptures. Based on meticulous field notations, Vieira’s exhaustive map elevates infrastructure, industry, and manufacture. She provides detailed information for objects when any is available and artworks recede into the background.

A Tour of the Monuments of Storm King Art Center offers four self-guided tours: WaterAccommodationsBoundaries, and Utilities. Copies of this limited edition will be available to all visitors for free, and can be obtained on October 11 and 12 during Storm King’s public hours. On each of these days, Vieira will give a short introduction to the project at 2pm at the Visitor Center. Presented with The Shandaken Project.

Allyson Vieira lives and works in New York.  She received a BFA in studio art from The Cooper Union and an MFA in sculpture from Bard College.

Vieira’s work has been presented in international institutions, including a recent museum solo show, The Plural Present, at the Kunsthalle Basel, Basel, Switzerland, which traveled to the Swiss Institute, New York (2013-14). Other international institutional presentations include the exhibition of finalists for the Future Generation Art Prize, PinchukCentre, Kiev, UA (2014-2015), and Build On, Build Against, with Stephen Ellis at Non Objectif Sud, Tulette, France (2013).  In the U.S., her work has been featured in Frieze Projects, Frieze NY (2015), Remainder, Philbrook Museum of Art, Tulsa, OK (2013), A Handful of Dust, Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum (2013), Configurations, Public Art Fund, Brooklyn, NY (2012),Lilliput, The Highline, New York (2012), and Knight’s Move, Sculpture Center, Long Island City, NY (2010). Recently, she has had major gallery presentations at Mendes Wood DM, São Paulo, BR (2015), The Breeder, Athens, GR (2014), Daniel Faria Gallery, Toronto, CA (2014), Laurel Gitlen, New York (2013, 2010), and Monica de Cardenas, Milan, IT (2011). Vieira’s work has also been included in exhibitions at The Sunday Painter, London (2015), Eleven Rivington, New York (2012), Klaus von Nichtssagend, New York (2011), Brown Gallery, London (2009), and 179 Canal Street, New York (2009). Her work has been covered by major publications, including The New York TimesThe New Yorker, ArtforumFriezeModern Painters, Architectural RecordDu, and Art in America.

Vieira’s writing has recently been featured on Conceptual Fine Art and in Du magazine, both 2015, and Artforum.com (2013).  She has lectured and participated in public discussions at Triple Canopy, “The End of the Image” (2015), The Jewish Museum, “Defining Structures: Contemporary Minimal” (2014), The University of Washington (2014), The Cooper Union (2014), Art Basel Miami Beach Salon, “Allyson Vieira: The Plural Present” (2013), Kent State University (2013), and PS1, “Configurations” (2012).

The Shandaken Project and Storm King Art Center collaborate on Wanderings and Wonderings presented in 2015. This public program  invites poets, artists, scholars, and performers to engage Storm King’s visitors, collection, and grounds through creative exploration.
