Wanderings & Wonderings: Zavé G. Martohardjono
2:00pm — 4:00pm
Responses: A Diaspora Tour
Led by Zavé Martohardjono with support from Lily Bo Shapiro
This tour is a performative exploration of selected sculptures by Asian diasporic artists from the Storm King collection. Led by Zavé Martohardjono with research collaboration from Lily Bo Shapiro, the tour will reveal and respond to the concepts, process, and geopolitical context of each work, as well as the biography of its maker. Reading beyond the “facts” offered in formal writings, the tour artists consider histories of anti-immigrant and anti-refugee backlash and dig into perspective, experience, politics, and subtext, evident or invisible, within each work visited.
Zavé Martohardjono is an interdisciplinary artist interested in geopolitics, social justice, queer glam, and embodied healing. They’ve performed at BAAD!, Boston Center for the Arts, Center for Performance Research, Gibney Dance, Issue Project Room, Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery, Movement Research at Judson Church, Panoply Performance Laboratory, Recess, the Wild Project, and elsewhere. Zavé was a Gibney Work Up 3.0 artist, has had residencies at The Shandaken Project at Storm King, La MaMa, and Chez Bushwick, and was a Lambda Literary Fellow.
Lily Bo Shapiro is a daughter of the city, assembling, shattering and refashioning the structuring forces of her living. Lily’s work takes up residence in the shiftings of archive, elision, and the strangely intimate through the distension and collapse of time and body.
Presented with The Shandaken Project
Initiated in 2013 by the Art Center, Wanderings & Wonderings invites visitors to engage with artists in creative and unexpected ways. Participating artists have created tours, maps, performances, poetry and movement workshops, new media, and deeply thoughtful conversations. Since 2015, Wanderings & Wonderings has been co-presented with Nicholas Weist, Director of The Shandaken Project at Storm King, and features select alumnae residents and their collaborators.
Artist talks are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
