Column I (Light House) exists somewhere between monolith, architecture and sculpture. For Houseago, the inherent impossibilities of making such an object led to a “consciously performative” process. Over a period of a few days, the artist decided to “act out this frustration between the formal, the architectural form and this kind of subversion of it.” By foregrounding in this work its handmade, unfinished, incongruous and time-based qualities, Houseago transcends habitual boundaries set up between sculpture and performance.
