Houseago has said he began making lamps because “I don't like extreme lighting at night. I like shadows. Shadows are really interesting when you're a sculptor.” While these lamps serve a utilitarian purpose in the artist's studio, they also connect in formal and conceptual ways to the practice of artists he has long admired, including Constantin Brancusi, Franz West and Paul McCarthy. Large Lamp I functions as both sculpture and beacon at Storm King, where it will serve as the meeting point for moonlit walking tours.
