Before the first installation of Lunar, Spencer Finch used a colorimeter to measure and replicate the exact color of the July 2011 full moon over Chicago, the first location in which the work was sited. Every day, Lunar absorbs solar energy, and as light fades, glows in that precise color. Thus, as Finch has said of the work, "every night it’s a full moon." Finch, whose work is deeply engaged with sense memories and the natural environment, created Lunar as an image of the moon. As he has said, "This really is a kind of nocturne — it is a picture of moonlight, it’s just a little bit unconventional."
