Swinburne Island, near Ellis Island in New York Harbor, was used as a quarantine zone for immigrants to the United States. Benglis has dedicated Swinburne Figure I to an aunt who may have died on the island as a child while with Benglis's grandmother, attempting to enter the United States from her native Greece; the truth is a well-kept, and painful, family secret.
