Docent Volunteer Application
About the Opportunity and Requirements:
Storm King Art Center is currently seeking volunteer docents for the 2017 season. Docents are specially trained to support the educational mission of Storm King and work with visitors of all ages. Docents guide adult, college, and school groups on tours of the permanent collection and special exhibitions, as well as help with public programs and events throughout the year and provide general information to Storm King’s visitors.
Candidates must be enthusiastic, curious, enjoy working with people, and be eager to learn. Working with the public requires an affable disposition and impeccable reliability. A background or interest in modern and contemporary art and/or landscape design is preferable. Teaching experience is a bonus. Candidates must be able to lead hour-long outdoor walking tours in variable weather conditions on Storm King’s hills, grass and gravel pathways.
To apply:
Interested candidates should complete the online volunteer application found below by January 17th. Select applicants will be invited to interview with Education Department staff.
Training:
Once selected, new docents will take part in a six-week intensive training course. Full-day sessions take place on Tuesdays beginning January 31. After completing training, docents are required to commit to one year of volunteer service. This includes attending regular meetings and ongoing training opportunities as well as leading a minimum of ten tours per season.
Perks:
Docents enjoy complimentary admission to Storm King for themselves and guests, as well as reciprocal admission to other institutions and discounts at our Museum store and the Storm King Cafe. In addition to these benefits, the docent program provides a vibrant social community. As a team, docents enjoy sharing their knowledge, interests, and experience with one another. Special behind-the-scenes tours, talks, and workshops at Storm King, trips to fabricators’ and artists’ studios, and expeditions to other museums provide for fun, lasting learning opportunities.
