About Wangechi Mutu
Wangechi Mutu’s work deals with the very idea of human representation; how we perceive and reproduce images of what we believe we are, how we view others and create images of what we think of them. In her ongoing conversations with figuration, what Mutu’s work looks at our value systems in Art and beyond, that either obscure or elevate our image and reflections. Internationally renowned for a practice that encompasses various techniques and mediums including sculpture, painting, film, installation and collages, Wangechi Mutu’s work features female hybrid creatures and vivid dystopian dreamscapes.
In 2022, Storm King was thrilled to present the exhibition Wangechi Mutu which featured eight of Mutu’s large-scale cast bronze works. Installed in the context of Storm King’s fields, meadows, woods, and ponds, these sculptures took on new resonance, while adding layers of meaning to the site’s existing ecologies and histories, including the consideration of the site and region as land that is the ancestral home of the Lenape.
Mutu’s work has been recently featured in several solo and group exhibitions worldwide, including Intertwined at both New Museum in New York and the New Orleans Museum of Art; the Sharjah Biennial, United Arab Emirates; The NewOnes, will free Us at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and Wangechi Mutu: I Am Speaking, Are You Listening? at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco.
