Children & Families: Scents of Storm King

Join us for Children & Families programming at A Summer Night! Explore the natural elements of Storm King through your sense of smell and learn to make incense, a substance that is burned to produce an aromatic scent. Please note, the incense will take about a week to dry out before it is ready to burn. Led by Marcela Torres

Marcela Torres is an artist, organizer, and educator that uses strength-building exercises and community rituals, to propose forms of reparations. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah and residing nomadically between Chicago,IL and Brooklyn, NY. Torres received a BA in Sculpture Intermedia and a BFA in Art History from the University of Utah, continuing their studies with a MFA in Performance from School of the Art Institute Chicago. Torres has performed at, Performance Space New York (NY,NY), the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts (Omaha, NE), The Momentary (Bentonville, AK), Fringe Festival (Detroit, MI), Experimental Actions (Houston, TX) and Time Based Arts (Portland, Oregon). Torres has exhibited work at Recess (Brooklyn, NY), Hyde Park Art Center (Chicago, IL) UW-Parkside University (Kenosha, WI) , Tropical Contemporary (Eugene, OR), Petzel Gallery (NYC, NY). Torres has been in residency at John Michael Kohler Arts Center (Kohler, WI), Franconia Sculpture Park (Schafer, MI), Recess (Brooklyn, NY), Latitude Chicago (Chicago,IL), Links Hall (Chicago,IL), Creative Exchange PICA (Portland,OR). They were a 2022 Chicago Dance Maker Forum Lab Artist, and a 2023 IACA Artist Fellowship Awardee for New Forms. In 2024 they have solo projects at Recess in Brooklyn and Arts and Public Life in Chicago

 

ACCESSIBILITY
Restrooms
Accessible portable restroom stalls are located near the South Picnic area. There is about 120 ft. of level, mown grass between the paved pathway and the restroom enclosures.

Picnicking
Wheelchair accessible picnic tables are located in the South Picnic area. There is about 30 ft. of mostly level, mown grass between the paved pathway and the picnic table.

Terrain
The program location is on mostly level, mown grass in the South Fields.

Shade and Seating
These programs are often under or near a tent. Depending on the program, participants may work at tables or move into the grassy field. Nearby trees provide a shady place to spread out. Folding stools are available.
